A Beautiful Morning Tea (v1)

Homosexual law reform would ultimately take sixteen months, from March 1985 to July 1986. During that time it was rarely far from the public eye. Night after night the television news carried stories about the bill, the protests, and the growing national debate. Before long, it became a talking point in homes, workplaces, and around kitchen tables across the country.

Just a couple of months into the campaign, two mothers meet for a morning tea. What begins as a friendly catch-up soon turns to the subject everyone seems to be talking about. These same two mothers reappear in Act 2 in the song The Space Between, where we find them again, this time working quietly together creating quilts.

[Verse 1]
Did you hear about that Stanley?
Young Stanley up the road
He’s one of them now, turned queer
Turned queer apparently

And apparently his mother told him
What his future will hold
And that’s when he ran away
Without a word

[Chorus]
A cup of tea?
A ginger nut?
A pastry, a tart?
This is indeed a beautiful morning tea

[Verse 2]
Apparently, Stanley heard somewhere, someone
Talking about changing the world
And apparently today was the day
He was gonna make that change

Well, that’s the trouble these days
Young Stanley wanting to change the world
He’s just going to upset everything
And that’s just typical Stanley

[Bridge]
He could never think of anyone else
And now he’s shattering
His mother’s world is shattering

[Chorus]
A cup of tea?
A ginger nut?
A pastry, a tart?
This is indeed a beautiful morning tea

[Instrumental Break]

[Outro]
In our day, we got what we got
And Stanley, will get what he gets

We got what we got
And he’ll get what he gets

And we’ll remind him of that
And we’ll remember him
That young Stanley
from up the road.
