Tag: Sun/Wakefield sauna (original site)

Location: 116 Wakefield Street, Wellington View on Map

The sauna opened in the early 1960s. In 1976 it was taken over by OUT! magazine owners Brett Sheppard and Tony Kativich and changed its format to a more blatant gay sex-on-site venue. It was aligned with Victoria Spa in Auckland. Sun sauna changed its name to Wakefield Sauna in 1982. The building was demolished in 1984. It moved to Trojan House (cnr Manners Street and Lukes Lane) in February 1984. It later moved to Tory Street. It closed in 2008 (Checkmate sauna then re-located to the same location - 15 Tory Street). Link: Out! Magazine
