Sixteen sports have been unveiled for the 2nd AsiaPacific Outgames, a week of sports competition, arts events and conferences set for Wellington in March 2011. The sports announced are: swimming, volleyball, dancesport, badminton, field hockey, netball, bridge, mountain biking, running (5k and 10k), tennis, fast-pitch softball, ten-pin bowling, lawn bowls, diving (platform and springboard), squash and golf. There are minimum numbers required for each sport to go ahead, say the Outgames crew. Registrations open next year, and the specific events within each sporting category will be available then. "The best venues in Wellington have been booked for the sports," says Outgames 2011 co-chair David Hindley. "For swimming, for example, that is the Regional Aquatic Centre, and for tennis, the Renouf Centre. Both facilities have previously hosted international competition. "Sports have been selected on the basis of their appeal in the community. Swimming, running and ten pin bowling are popular at international GLBT competitions, but many also have strong spectator appeal - dancesport, tennis and diving in particular," he adds. Outgames organisers are keen for people to register on the Outgames 2011 website to receive update newsletters as planning continues.
