New Family stage set for Wigorama shows

Fri 24 Apr 2009 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

New Zealand's busiest gay nightclub has a brand new space for its favourite drag showgirls to entertain the crowds - just in time for tonight's special Rainbow Youth fundraiser. Ready to wig out: Family's new stage A new, higher stage has been constructed on the right-hand-side wall of the popular K' Road club, giving Miss Ribena and her girls a new spot to strut around on - and will no doubt become a popular spot for punters to show themselves off between shows. Family bar owner Wayne Clark says the new stage is just part of refurbishment plans which will see more of the right-hand-side wall, near the main bar area, get elevated. "Then we'll get to work on the bar," he tells GayNZ.com. "It's time to improve it all and do something nice with the space." Tonight will see over 40 drag entertainers present a night of two-dozen non-stop shows to support LGBT young people's charity Rainbow Youth. Wigorama 2009 will start at 8pm and go through until the club must close at Midnight due to ANZAC Day licensing laws. Ribena says she's had a huge amount of interest in the event as "the community wants to get right behind Rainbow Youth. Buckwheat, Miss K, Miss Mole, Kyra Panties, Tiffany Rose and many more of our sisters will camp camp camp it up all night long!" Rainbow Youth's volunteers will be shaking donation buckets on the door, and there'll also be a fundraising sausage sizzle.
