Milk movie nominated for eight Oscars

The film which tells the story of assassinated gay politician Harvey Milk, has overnight been nominated for eight Academy Awards. Oscar hopes: Sean Penn as Harvey Milk Sean Penn is nominated as Best Actor for his portrayal of Harvey Milk, and Josh Brolin is up for Best Supporting Actor for playing Milk's killer Dan White. Gus Van Sant has been nominated as Best Director, and other nominations include costume design, film editing, best original music, best picture and best original screenplay. Penn's latest Oscar nomination is his fifth, after nominations for his roles in Mystic River, I am Sam, Sweet and Lowdown, and Dead Man Walking. Director Gus Van Sant had previously been nominated for Good Will Hunting. Oscar night is Sunday 22 February 2009, in Hollywood's Kodak Theatre. Milk opens in cinemas across New Zealand on Thursday 5 February, following GayNZ.com's screening in Auckland on Wednesday 28 January, and an OUTline NZ fundraising screening on Wednesday 4 February.
