Perth: Lesbian killer seeks shorter sentence

Sun 7 Dec 2008 In: International News View at Wayback

A young lesbian from Perth who is serving a minimum of 24 years in jail after she and her girlfriend brutally killed a teenage girl and dumped her body in a wheelie bin is now seeking a shorter sentence. The pair bludgeoned 16-year-old Stacey Mitchell with a concrete block, strangled her with a chain and then videoed her blood-splattered bedroom and semi-naked body. Because Mitchell was taking a long time to die, Stasinowksy then wrapped a belt chain around her neck. After she died, the pair kissed each other over the body. Jessica Ellen Stasinowsky, 21, and her girlfriend Valerie Paige Parashumti, 19, were sentenced in the West Australian Supreme Court in March after pleading guilty to Stacey's willful murder at a Perth house in December 2006. The killer couple, who were both serving life sentences in the same Perth prison, were split up last month after reports surfaced that the were regularly spending time together and had even met for sex in prison. Plans were made to house them in different jails. Stasinowsky's lawyer, Tom Percy QC, has this week told the Appeals Court that the murder was not in the worst category and called on the minimum sentence to be shortened to 20 years, reports ABC News.
