Sun 24 Aug 2008 In: International News

Openly-gay Australian diver Matthew Mitcham has stunned China with a set of spectacular dives tonight which earned him Olympic gold. Victory: Matthew Mitcham shocked China with his near-perfect final dive Mitcham's performance in the Men's 10m Platform final – culminating in a 'near perfect' final dive – came as a shock to the Chinese who were hoping for their 50th Olympic gold to round out their hosting team victory. Chinese athletes had taken gold in all the other diving categories. The 20-year-old's stunning back 2.5 somersaults with 2.5 twists saw him score four perfect 10s and a 9.5 to total 112.10. Mitcham is the first Australian ever to compete in the Olympic Games while open about his homosexuality, and is the only gay man of the ten openly LGBT athletes in the 2008 Beijing Olympiad.
