Mon 19 Nov 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News View at NDHA

Rainbow Labour MP Charles Chauvel says he will again seek votes in Wellington's Ohariu-Belmont electorate in next year's election, and another gay Wellingtonian has stepped forward to be Labour's candidate in Wellington Central. Grant Robertson The Ohariu electorate is currently held by United Future leader Peter Dunne. Chauvel was expected to contest the Wellington Central seat, but last week withdrew his nomination and indicated he would seek candidacy for Ohariu. Wellington Central Labour MP Marion Hobbs is retiring at the next election and her seat is now likely to go to Labour's Rainbow Sector Council co-Chair, NZ AIDS Foundation Board member and former adviser to PM Helen Clark, Grant Robertson. "I am involved in politics because of my passionate belief in social justice, and my desire to make our city, our country and the world a fairer and more equal place," Robertson explains. "For me, equality is the basis of aspiration, opportunity and success." Robertson is also standing for re-election for the NZ AIDS Foundation Board of Trustees at the Foundation's Annual General Meeting this Saturday 24 November. He says he has contributed much during the NZAF's 'time of change' since he joined the Foundation in December 2005, and is keen for greater use of the internet to stay as connected as possible to the communities most affected by HIV. "I believe I have the skill set and experience to help NZAF meet its goals, and to be a key player in reducing the relevance and incidence of HIV in New Zealand, and improving the quality of life of those living with HIV," Robertson says.
