Auckland election results "dismal" - Rea

Sat 13 Oct 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

5:30PM: Lesbian Auckland City Council candidate Lindsey Rea sums up the Auckland City mayoral result so far in one word: "Dismal". Lindsey Rea "It's going to be three nasty years with John Banks as the mayor again," she elaborates. "I'm amazed that Auckland City's forgotten so quickly." With Banks and has crew in charge, it's going to be a very difficult three years for Auckland City's LGBT population, she says. "The support we had will not be there. No more Partnerships Committee, and probably very little of the community support the previous council did. Anti-gay David Hay will no doubt again be installed as deputy mayor, she believes. "We've seen the 'Hollow Men' want their city back. This result means that Banks and Citizens and Ratepayers can basically do what they like. They have an absolute majority. "And the things involving our community were the things they constantly said were a waste of money". 98% of the votes are counted - and Rea is only 70 votes behind in third place for the two available Western Bays city council seats - so she says "I'm not giving up until the last ballot's counted."     Ref: GayNZ.com (m)
