The future of Auckland's Lesbian Business Association (ALBA) may be at risk, as a number of its key committee members have made plans to resign. “There will also be a number of vacancies on the committee and in reality, if we are unable to attract sufficient interest, then the future of ALBA is in jeopardy,” says a press release from the organisation. A special planning meeting to bring these issues to the attention of its members and the wider community has been organised for tomorrow night – “we'll be canvassing opinion and discussing strategies for the organisation,” says ALBA's coordinator Sara Donaghey. ALBA was established in 2000, and has become an important part of the lesbian community. The organisation has been shaped and energised by key committee members such as current coordinator Sara Donaghey and past members such as Jan Suckling. They have worked with committee members to realise a vision by staging excellent events, providing networking opportunities, and supporting lesbians and the wider community. ALBA is now at the stage of requiring a review, says the committee. Coordinator Sara Donaghey and a number of other committee members will be resigning at the next Annual General Meeting in September. The remaining committee members are very concerned that ALBA may not be able to maintain a viable executive and therefore that the future of ALBA may be at risk. “It is crucial that women who have the vision, time and energy, think about putting themselves forward for the key coordinator roles or roles. We need a woman – one or perhaps two – who can give direction, coordination and work with the committee to ensure ALBA continues to be a dynamic, relevant organisation that meets the diverse needs of the lesbian community.” Should a coordinator come forward, then she could work with the remaining committee members to encourage nominations for the other executive positions,” say the committee. “These positions relate to the programme; membership; promotion Ref: ALBA, DivaWeb, GayNZ.com (m)
