Regular gay show planned for George FM

Thu 1 Mar 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

New Zealand's only nationwide gay radio show, called 1 in 10 with hosts 'Billy and Bob', will begin next week, George FM has announced. The weekly two-hour show will start at 10pm, Monday 5th March. George FM's programmers describe the show as "giving all of us the opportunity to be fun, proud, non-judgmental New Zealanders, just out for a good time. "Gay, straight, bisexual, lesbian or other, you'll find the show content humorous, informative and even poignant. Features include weekly special guests, homosexual horoscopes, Gay news with Hot Toddy, Gary's Gay Gig Guide and much more with DJ Billy spinning an eclectic mix of music". Co-Programme Director Dean Campbell says, "Off the glittering aftermath of our involvement in the fabulous Hero Festival 2007 we're pleased as hot pink punch to welcome back a gay show to the George FM Airwaves and the happy George FM Family." George FM used to have a gay show years ago, says Billy, co-host of the new show. “And bFM used have one a long time ago, but there's been nothing in the last four or five years. Plus, because this is George FM, we're national, and because we're streamed over the net, we're international as well”. Every week there'll be an interview with “someone of interest to the gay community, not necessarily a gay person, but somebody of interest,” Billy reveals. “I'll be doing the music for the first half of the show. There'll be a guest DJ every week - the first week our guest is Samuel Holloway, doing the music for the second half of the show. “We're trying to take things a little bit further as well – we're both gay, but gay is not everything in our lives. “We'll have Gary's Gay Gig Guide, where Gary will be talking about all sorts of events – not just ‘gay' events but events that gay people are going to be into. So there'll be a bit of theatre, and all sorts of different things that are going on”. It's George FM, so it's going to be very musically-based, Billy continues. “But there's going to be all sorts of other elements as well, different things that will come and go as we find our feet”. George FM's programmers also mentioned the station's recent controversial “Would you lose $16,000, or suck a man's penis?” segment, which upset some GayNZ.com readers who then contacted us. “In a recent poll, George FM listeners were asked whether they'd rather kiss goodbye to 16000 dollars or kiss a man... down there. It really caused quite the storm in a strawberry daiquiri. “The majority of our female listeners preferred to take their lead from Kool and The Gang and "Get down on it". Therefore, all women must be gay. “The heterosexual males were adamant that they'd rather empathise with the poor. We felt this proved them sensitive souls and subsequently, gay. “And as for our extremely turgid gay contingent, no need to state our findings there. “So our postulations have lead to one conclusion - George FM is very gay”.     Ref: George FM, GayNZ.com (m)
