Chicago party shooting not hate crime

Fri 5 Jan 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

The shootings of six men at a weekend gay party in Chicago appears not to have been motivated by homophobia. The city's only openly gay alderman Tom Tunney tells radio station WBBM that he has met with investigators and says he was told the shootings may have started as a quarrel between people who were at the party. Tunney said believe believe the shooters had been kicked out of the party and returned with guns and opened fire. "We will continue to work with them and ask them to make sure that they uncover every clue so that it at least gives some degree of credibility to their investigation and the fact that, while it sounds on the surface that it could be a hate crime and potentially somebody out there that could cause further damage, they actually believe it's an isolated incident," Tunney told WBBM. A police spokesperson declined to confirm Tunney's conversation with officers involved, saying that the case remains an ongoing investigation. Two masked men burst into an apartment in the house early Sunday morning, spraying semi-automatic gunfire throughout the living room hitting six men. Residents in the area say the apartment was rented by two gay men and was the scene of frequent loud parties. Police initially said the shootings may have been a hate crime and called in the police civil rights unit for assistance. But investigators said the the gunmen did not use homophobic slurs. One neighbor told the Chicago Sun-Times that the building was known as the 'Gay House'. A man who said his brother lives in the apartment said that his brother had complained for several months about being harassed by people in the neighborhood for being gay. None of the victims received life-threatening injuries and all but two have been released from hospital.     Ref: 365gay.com (m)
