Music Festival features queer band

Tue 31 Jan 2006 In: New Zealand Daily News

This year sees the launch of the Mount Cook Music Festival in Wellington, where upcoming queer band A Band Called Dave will be featuring in their biggest gig to date. A Band Called Dave is a 5-piece queer-girl band, who play crowd-pleasing guitar-driven chick-rock with a funky clarinet twist. The band played at Wellington's Gay and Lesbian Fair last year, and have since been developing material and refining their sound with a view to record later this year, says lead singer Alayna Ashby. Their profile is expanding on the Wellington music scene, with further upcoming gigs planned at Heavenly Burlesque during the Fringe Festival, another slot at the Gay and Lesbian Fair this year, and plans to rock venues throughout the city. The Mount Cook Music Festival is the brainchild of Wellington musos Adam Mantereys and Neil Crowe, who decided to develop the idea and hold the music festival in a carpark in Mt Cook, Wellington, near their home in the eclectic suburb of Newtown. The 2006 Festival is on 11 February, from 2pm until 7pm.
