Figures show that over half of the prostitutes arrested for soliciting over the last five years were male, and half of the overall arrests were made up of Maori or Pacific Island People. " ... so it's the brown men. They're the ones the police go for first," says Labour MP Tim Barnett, who sponsored this week's Prostitution Reform Bill. "It's an interesting reflection of the way our society works - it doesn't reflect the range of workers on the streets." There have been 354 arrests for soliciting in New Zealand over the last five years. The new bill, which among other things has decriminalised the act of soliciting, comes into effect next week.
