Paul Foster-Bell MP First-time National MP Paul Foster-Bell has come out as a gay man, in part as a reaction to a much-criticised sermon by Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki's linking the Christchurch earthquakes to the sin of being gay and to the leading role a gay MP took in the campaign for Civil Unions. Bell, a list MP, says there are times in his career when he has had to be discreet about his sexuality, particularly when posted overseas as a diplomat, particularly inn the Middle East. “My overseas postings were in places like Iran and Saudi Arabia, where if you were an openly gay diplomat there, you’d risk perhaps being made persona non grata... that is, put on the next plane out of the country, booted out and lose your job," hew said in an interview on TVNZ's Q
