Tens of thousands of people poured into the streets of Mexico City for the 38th annual Pride parade over the weekend. Mexico’s largest LGBTI event, Remezcla reports that the march largely defeated cynical predictions that the recent attacks in Xalapa and Orlando would lead to a smaller turnout. A small number of of participants carried overtly political signs of protest but mostly the event was a celebratory. Photo/Marco Ugarte) Parade participant Carlos Soto told Remezcla “The violence [in Orlando and Xalapa] probably didn’t change the Pride parade in and of itself. But at least for me, it had an empowering effect. In a way, it gave me the force I needed to go out to the streets and be who I am without fear. “I guess Mexican politics should be focused on security and justice; making laws that are for all of us, including LGBT rights.”
