601 NGOs from 147 countries are supporting a call for an Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity to be created by The Human Rights Council to ensure a systematic and institutionalised response to human rights violations against LGBTI people. Six Latin American countries have tabled the proposed resolution that seeks to affirm the application of human rights standards to those facing violation as a result of their gender identity or sexual orientation. These include the right to life, freedom from torture, privacy, and protection from arbitrary detention.
