Gay magazine editor dies after long illness

Fri 15 Nov 2002 In: New Zealand Daily News

The longtime editor of New Zealand's Out! magazine, Brett Sheppard, has died of cancer. An announcement from the Auckland offices of the gay businesses which Sheppard co-owned says he fought a long battle with cancer before succumbing in the early hours of this morning. For 25 years he edited Out! magazine and supported many of New Zealand's formative movements for gay rights. He was a tireless fighter for the right to import or publish gay literature and information. The announcement describes Sheppard as "a voice, a worker and a man of great courage."
