Durex are campaigning for a condom emoji to be added to the current emoji’s available ahead of World Aids Day on 1 December. Realising that the current emoji’s can insinuate sex but don’t quite do it when it comes to safe sex, Durex have launched the #CondomEmoji campaign to push for the emoji to be introduced in the next update. Durex say “an official safe sex emoji will enable young people to overcome embarrassment around the discussion of safe sex." The emoji has the potential to "encourage conversation and raise awareness of the importance of using condoms in protecting against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV and AIDS,” they say. Executive Director of the NZAF, Shaun Robinson says: “NZAF thinks the Durex campaign for an condom emoji is great. Promoting condoms as a normal part of sex in the whole community strengthens the Love Your Condom message for gay and bisexual guys. “Hook-up apps are a huge ‘virtual venue’ where thousands of people meet sex partners,” he says. “Gay men have been heavily engaged with these kinds of apps for many years. Love Your Condom advertises extensively on a wide range of apps and it is a very effective way of getting the condom message out there.”
