Police harassment claims at Auckland park

Fri 27 Sep 2002 In: New Zealand Daily News

A number of Auckland gay men are complaining of police harassment late at night at Western Springs Park. An isolated area of the inner-city park attracts men cruising for sex partners at night, however both men who contacted GayNZ.com say they were only cruising to hook up elsewhere and were not having sex at the park. They claim police officers are now regularly patrolling the park, demanding name, address and workplace information. When challenged the police officers have allegedly said they are responding to complaints from members of the public. The Auckland police media spokesperson has not responded to questions sent 48 hours ago from GayNZ.com.
