VIDEO: Out Takes Film Fest

Tue 22 May 2007 In: Movies View at Wayback View at NDHA

This year's Out Takes Film Fest presents several transgender true stories from around the globe, plus you're sure to fall head over heels for transsexual sex-worker Marieta in the opening night film '20 Centimetres': 20 Centimetres plays on the opening night of the festival, in Auckland on May 24, Wellington on May 31, and Christchurch on June 7. Here's another sneak-peek from the movie - Marieta imagines married life to the tune of Madonna's 'True Blue': Wellington festival goers may want to catch Mani Bruce Mitchell of the NZ Intersex Trust, presenting a narrated slide-show at 7pm on Monday 4 June, before the 8.30pm intersex-themed film collection 'Any Body'. Rebecca Swan - author and photographer of 'Assume Nothing', will join Mitchell after the screening for a question and answer session. Also of note is the 'Gender Rebel' collection of documentaries. From Germany, 'XX to XY: Fighting to be Jake' shows a young FTM's courage in standing up against society, the medical system, and his own fears. From the USA, the 'Gender Rebels' define themselves as something that incorporates both male and female. 'A Girl Named Kai' travels four countries in search of love, fame and identity, and South Africa's 'Enraged by a Picture' examines the fallout from a controversial exhibition which sought to illuminate the hidden bodies of courageous subjects. The collection plays in Auckland on June 2, Wellington on June 3 and Christchurch on June 10. 'Hotel Gondolin' - two documentaries about transgendered sex workers in Argentina and in Brazil and how they support each other, play in Auckland on June 3, and Wellington on June 10. And in the USA's 'Red without Blue', formerly identical twin boys grow up to become a gay man and a transgendered woman (in Auckland June 2, Wellington June 9).
