On May 22 Ireland will vote on marriage equality. It will be the first time anywhere in the world that a national referendum has considered the issue. There is strong hope the measure will pass, with a recent poll showing 70 percent of voters support allowing same-sex couples marry. The referendum was called for by the public, during Ireland's Constitutional Convention, where 79 per cent of that people's forum called for Government to hold a referendum to allow for civil marriage equality. Kieran Rose, Yes Equality spokesperson says the referendum offers the chance for lesbian and gay people to become equal citizens in the country they call home. "We are confident that a majority of Irish citizens believe that everyone should be free to marry the person they love and will vote yes in this referendum." The campaign is ramping up with an ad from the group BeLonG To featuring a number of local celebrities, including Brian Gleeson, which you can watch below. GayNZ.com staff - 17th April 2015
