NZAF sees solid rise in HIV testing rate

Sat 31 Jan 2015 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The New Zealand AIDS Foundation's HIV testing rate rose in the second half of 2014, and it hopes offering free tests at next weekend’s Big Gay Out will help keep the momentum going. The NZAF's Health Services Team administered 1226 tests in the six months to the end of December 2014, up from 1040 in the same period the year before. That’s a 17 per cent increase. NZAF Director Shaun Robinson is attributing the bump to down to more promotion and better access. “I would say it is due to continuing to push our outreach of testing into more events such as Auckland’s Big Gay Out, Wellington’s Out in the Square and Hui Takataapui, as well as our clinics at university campuses and in South Auckland,” he says. The NZAF says the popularity of rapid tests is growing because they are so responsive and quick, which is what people want in a testing experience. “It’s great that testing is increasing as we know that 20 per cent of gay men who have HIV don’t know it and that 50 per cent of people diagnosed with HIV test late,” adds Manager Health Services Sean Kelly. “The team is always looking for ways to reach more people.” NZAF will offer a free sexual health screening service, working in conjunction with the Auckland Sexual Health Service, at the LYC Big Gay Out at Auckland's Coyle Park on 8 February. No bookings will be necessary. Anyone who wants to book a free rapid test for another time can do so confidentially online or by calling 0800 802 437.
