The family of a New Zealander filmmaker who died when he was just 17 is battling for his frozen sperm to be given to his sister and her female partner, so they can have a baby. Cameron Duncan died from bone cancer in 2003. Before he died, he expressed his wish to father a child in the future, and banked his sperm under his mother’s ownership. The Herald on Sunday reports that in 2010 the family’s request for his sperm to be used by his sister’s female partner was rejected by the Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology. Under current laws a dead man’s sperm can only be used with his prior written approval, and because he was a minor nobody has the right to use it. The Herald on Sunday says it understands the Duncans will now argue Cameron intended for the sperm to be used when he gave his mother ownership rights. Read more here
