Daley cleans up competition in 10m

Sun 3 Aug 2014 In: International News

Gay English diver Tom Daley pulled off a couple of near-perfect dived to win the men’s 10 metre individual platform at the Commonwealth Games this morning, by a country mile. The 20-year-old finished with 516.55, well ahead of the Malaysian silver medallist who scored 433.70. Daley retains the Commonwealth title he won 2010. He held the lead from the start, and commentators says he overcame his problems with his so-called 'demon dive' - a back 2.5 somersault, 2.5 twist routine - which was his second dive of the night. Daley’s boyfriend, screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, has been quick to publicly congratulate him on Twitter: After a long few days of competition, gay Aussie diver Matthew Mitcham finished fourth with a mixed bag of dives. He’d earlier made it through the preliminary diving in second place, behind Daley. Mitcham has described it as a "shocker of a comp", but adds "Never mind, I've got one gold and two silver plunging pendant necklaces that I'm extremely proud of!!"He's thanked people from all over the world who have supported him. The 26-year-old former Olympic champion has been hinting he may retire, but perhaps only from individual competition. "I think Rio is a long shot as an individual diver. I have so much I want to do,” he’s told media this morning. Mitcham been busy outside the sport with a touring cabaret show based on his autobiography Twists and Turns, in which he explores everything from his Olympic gold glory to struggles with drug addiction and mental health issues.
