Urzila Carlson’s entire Auckland season at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival has sold out. She begins a five night run of The Long Flight to Freedom at the The Loft at Q Theatre tonight. Demand was so high for the Friday and Saturday night performances; they have been moved to the larger venue of the Rangatira at Q. The South Africa born and raised comedian had her first foray into comedy five years ago, when colleagues encouraged her to give an open mic night a go. She fell in love, and since then has gained a following on both sides of the Tasman with her stand up, and appeared regularly on current affairs comedy show 7 Days. Carlson’s style centres on having a laugh at herself, and she has always been open about being a lesbian in her shows, poking fun at the Sapphic world. Testament to her ever-growing popularity is the adoration fans are expressing on social media, prompting Carlson to advise one eager admirer: “You need to take a deep breath love you make me feel like I'm in One Direction!”
