Paul Newby is 2012’s Mr Bear Canterbury. He answers our series of silly, serious and revealing questions, and we learn he has been with his partner for 30 years! Nawwwww! Congratulations on winning Mr Bear Canterbury! Thanks Grrrr! What do you do for a job? Work for Smithscity as a credit controller. What's your background, and where did you grow up? Born in Whangarei. Went to Whangarei Boys’ High School. Best years of my life! he he he Moved to Christchurch when I was 17. When did you come out as gay, and what was it like for you at the time? I sort of came out at school. They knew but never teased me as I was 6ft at 15 and anyone that pissed me off was thrown in the bin. Bully no. Assertive yes! What's your relationship status, and what kind of guys do you most admire? I met my partner very young. We have been together 30 years in February. We travel often and he is my best friend, lover and soul mate. I admire confident guys that know they are men. Jason Statham yum!!!! Mmmmmm !!!!!!! Woof Woof Grrrrr What do you think are the most pressing issues currently facing the NZ's LGBT community? Gay marriage! Why can I not get married in New Zealand. We are citizens. We pay taxes. We have been together 30 years. (Yes I know I have covered this) But I feel that it is discrimination against the LGBT community. What's your worst habit? Eating everything. What's your biggest fear? Eating too much of everything and heights. Your favourite music at the moment? I love classical, jazz, opera, dance. But my favourite at the moment is the Christchurch group Moorhouse. Any books or magazines you're reading and recommending? I am a book worm. Reading every night. I love good mysteries. The one I will not be reading is 50 shades. Well maybe a peek! Your favourite movies? Enchanted April get the tissue box. I also liked The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Your favourite TV programmes? Don’t have time for TV. Doing garden, study, gym and reading. Like to catch the news but would like more world content. Your favourite websites? He he he I can’t possibly tell you that! Even if I did you wouldn’t print it. If you could have one wish granted what would it be? Total equality for the LGBT community and to be accepted for who you are (yes that’s 2!) Who are your LGBT heroes? Topp Twins they have brought NZ to the world stage. Gr8 music, funny and always pushing the boundaries. What's coming up in the near future for you?
