File photo A new survey shows 64 per cent of people either support marriage equality, or don’t care either way whether gay people are allowed to marry. The Research New Zealand survey found 32 per cent are against marriage equality. When it came to full support, 49 per cent were in favour, while 15 per cent said they did not care one way or the other, which led researchers to the conclusion “64 per cent support, or at least do not oppose, same sex marriages”. They say it shows New Zealand has a fairly liberal attitude on the issue. On the issue of adoption, 64 per cent are in favour of same-sex couples who marry automatically being able to adopt, while 31 per cent are not in favour. With same sex couples in a civil union not able to adopt children under current law, 62 per cent of those surveyed are in favour of same sex couples in civil union being able to adopt children.
