Thu 28 Jun 2012 In: International News

A makeshift memorial at the killings scene Police in the Texas town of Portland are yet to formally interview the survivor in the shooting of a lesbian couple in a park. Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, was killed in the shooting at Violet Andrews Park on the weekend, while her girlfriend Mary Kristene Chapa, 18, was critically injured by a gunshot wound to the head. She is now in a stable condition in hospital. “An empty shell casing from a large calibre handgun was found at the scene leading investigators to believe the shootings occurred where the girls were found,” a statement from Portland’s Chief of Police Randy L. Wright reads. “A motive in this case has not been established. Information from family and friends indicates that Mollie and Mary were engaged in a same-sex relationship. However, there is no current evidence to indicate the attacks were motivated by that relationship,” he continues. “Because of her current medical condition, Mary Chapa has not been formally interviewed about the attacks.” Vigils are planned across the US for Friday, which is the day Olgin’s funeral will be held. Meanwhile, Texas Rangers have been called in to help with the investigation.
