Who are you and what's your background? I'm an 18 year old who's just left school, having been Head Boy at Mt Roskill Grammar School in 2005, and am now going to Auckland University on a Scholarship. I'm currently acting in an amazing theatre production called Black Ice, on at the Auckland Town Hall Concert Chamber from Feb 11th to the 18th. How did your casting in the lead role for Black Ice come about? I auditioned, along with a number of other people, having been headhunted by one of the directors of the show, Lynne Cardy. Do you think playing a heterosexual character will harm your career? Not unless I screw it up! What characterises the New Zealand GLBT community for you? Pride. What is the worst thing for you about being GLBT? The fact that most people seem to be unable to come to terms with a bi guy. They can get the hang of the fact that I like men easily enough, but tell people I hooked up with a girl and I'm usually treated to "What? REALLY? … Harry, does this mean you've, like, switched back to girls? Good for you!" What is the best thing? Having sex with men. Relationship status? Single. Favourite food and drink? Starburst Squirts / Red Bull and Jagermeisters. Worst habit? Talking to myself. Most noble feature? Inability to stay angry at anyone or anything for any length of time. Favourite TV programme? Boston Legal and Eating Media Lunch Favourite movie? Christopher Guest's A Mighty Wind. Qualities you most appreciate in a GLBT person? Open-mindedness – which includes not being reversely discriminatory of straight people. And it never hurts to be extremely good-looking. What are you reading at the moment? The Athenian Murders, by Jose Carlos Somoza, Mutants, by Armand Marie Leroi, and Labyrinth, by Kate Mosse Who in the world including NZ would you most like to have a coffee and a chat with? Sir Ian McKellen. Role models? My family. What is the most pressing issue currently facing the NZ GLBT population? The spread of STIs, probably. If you could have one wish granted what would it be? To have superpowers. And it'd be a laugh to be embarrassingly famous for a while. GayNZ.com - 15th February 2006
