Odd Future to play solo show on eve of BDO

Sun 4 Dec 2011 In: New Zealand Daily News

After being pulled from the Big Day Out, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All will play a solo show on the eve of the annual music festival in Auckland. The alternative hip hop group will play at The Powerstation on Thursday 17 January, with Big Day Out ticket holders being offered a discount so they will only pay $37.30, rather than the full price of $73. The solo show comes after Odd Future was pulled from the Big Day Out line-up, following complaints from gay people, including Wellington man Calum Bennachie, about the homophobic nature of the collective's lyrics and its constant use of the word 'faggot'. Intervention from Auckland City Councillor Sandra Coney saw the rappers removed from the festival's schedule, as it's held at Mt Smart Stadium which is council-owned. The decision sparked a storm of controversy; with some angry at the censorship of the group, and many fans outraged they had bought a Big Day Out ticket and would not get to see Odd Future perform at the festival. Bennachie even received a number of death threats from more zealous Odd Future fans.
