Feast of art on offer at GABA Gold Auction

‘Spaceman Cigarettes’, a limited edition silk-screened print by Michael Parekowhai GABA's strongest ever catalogue of artworks will go under the hammer at the GABA Gold Auction this Sunday night. The works comprise those by acclaimed New Zealand artists, including Michael Parekowhai, Reuben Paterson, Sally Burton, Ewan McDougall, Miriam Saphira, K. Airini Vane, David K. Shields and Agnes Wood; Australian artist Ross Watson; and American artists, Jeanne Roth and Jane Aughey. There's also a variety of celebrity items and experiences being auctioned off, including signed books from Stephen Fry, a personal portrait shoot with photographer Russ Flatt, a walk-on-role experience for two people on Shortland Street, a walk-and-talk garden consultation with Tony Murrell, a signed Rugby World Cup Referees jersey, and the mandatory Dan Carter-signed Jockey undergarments. For political junkies, there are wining and dining experiences with Labour's Maryan Street and Jacinda Ardern, National's Nikki Kaye and Maggie Barry, plus two signed bottles of Prime Minister John Key's private reserve Pinot Noir. All proceeds go to the Gay Auckland Business Association's Charitable Trust, which helps community groups and to out students with academic promise. An exhibited artwork by photographer David K. Shields, whose work was most recently acquired by the Wallace Arts Trust. ‘Arches 1’ and ‘Arches 2’ (gouache on paper, both 280 x 440mm, framed). Two paintings by K. Airini Vane (1891-1963), donated by Judith Anderson Gallery in Hastings. ‘Itchycoo Park’, 2008 (oil on canvas, 460 x 920mm, image attached). A work by expressionist New Zealand artist Ewan McDougall, whose 49 years of painting are celebrated in the new art book, ‘Ewan McDougall: Paintings’. ‘Soldiers, Off Set’ (800 x 700mm, framed, image attached). A limited edition print by contemporary realist Australian artist Ross Watson, donated by Murray Smallfield and Ross Watson. ‘A Lot To Say’ (oil on canvas, 840 x 400mm). A painting by contemporary New Zealand artist Dr. Miriam Saphira. Signed copies of ‘The Fry Chronicles’, the 2010 autobiography of Stephen Fry; and the Harry Potter Audio Books, as read by Stephen Fry. A 90-minute walk-and-talk garden consultation with Tony Murrell, landscape designer, star of TV One’s ‘Mucking In’, RadioLIVE host and author.
