"Fag hag" finds laughs in pageant madness

Mon 25 Apr 2011 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Self-confessed "fag hag" Penny Ashton will poke fun at beauty pageants in her show for the New Zealand International Comedy Festival. The poet and comedienne otherwise known as Ms Hot Pink is doing a show all about the history of Beauty Pageants called Hot Pink Teeth ‘n' Tits. "It's about their history, scandals, crazy different sorts of pageants and will include a 15 minute mini-documentary about me attending Miss Universe, which I did in Las Vegas last year," Ashton says. "It will also have songs, some dancing and an audience swimwear competition." Ashton says she lost a pageant at the age of nine and has never fully recovered. She is setting the show in 1983, the year Lorraine Downes won, and will have a "massive frufru frock and blonde wig to match". The comedienne says she was astounded by the number of gay men who were at Miss Universe, saying it was akin to a mardi gras for tiaras, and she is hoping plenty of gay men come along to her show and share her pageant of fun. Ashton will be onstage at BATS in Wellington from May 3-7 and Auckland's Aotea Centre from May 10-14.
