Eliana Rubashkyn - A Refugee Among Refugees
Eliana's case attracted international media attention after she was detained at Hong Kong International Airport's immigration facility for over 8-months as her appearance did not match her passport. She was eventually granted refugee status and, after enduring many hardships, was resettled in Aotearoa New Zealand.
She is known internationally for being the first transgender woman recognised under international law as a woman without undergoing sex reassignment surgery. Eliana was the first, and at the time of this recording, the only gender refugee in Aotearoa New Zealand.
